Tywin Lannister, Jason Mamoa, and Don Draper walk into a monastery...
Character Profile: St Columba
I’ve spent all week imagining my version of Colmcille, St Columba in his latin form. One of the three Patron Saints of Ireland (with Patrick and Brigid), Colmcille is a fascinating, contradictory subject. A prince who became a monk who became an exile who became one of the most powerful men in the western world and eventually became a saint.
Colmcille started a war over a stolen copy of a book (he did the stealing) and let 3000 unnamed and unremembered people die because of it. He was exiled from Ireland as penance and while away he goes on to create one of the most important intellectual centres in Europe on the Scottish island of Iona.
But how to breathe life back into the man? What would he do and say? How would he have carried himself? Why did people follow him? Why did Kings listen to him? What are the stories behind the myths?
This is where Tywin, Jason Mamoa, and John Draper come in. Power, entitlement, strength, fellowship, and charm.
